This is a wonderful book. Intelligent, witty, engrossing and very informative. Everyone knows of John Snow and the Broad St pump, but this puts the man in perspective and his achievement. He was a man of strong beliefs and was not afraid to stick to them. He was a teetotaller in an age when alcohol was seen as a very positive thing, even medicinal. His medical friends were upset by his anchorite tendencies. he was also an early vegetarian. He pioneered anaesthesia through clever experiments, often on himself. he convinced himself that cholera was passed via the faecal-oral route when everyone was miasamists. The story of how he was proven correct is compelling and moving. A great book for anyone, but especially GPs.
